So much has happened since the last time I wrote for
this site.
The WWF ended their legacy by dropping the "F"
and adding a God-awful "E."
There was a bad airplane ride. Fights occurred ...
songs were sung ... hair was cut ...
Hall and Hennig were "released."
Thesz, Wahoo and Pee Wee died.
And on May 18, 2002, another proverbial chapter in the
ongoing niche known as "wrestling's tragedies" when
Davey Boy Smith aka The British Bulldog passed away at
the age of 39.
Now, personally, after reading Diana Hart's "Under the Mat," the
passing of The Bulldog was kind of a surprise ... but
not really, if that makes sense. There seemed to be a
recklessness ... an uncertainty in the way Diana Hart
portrayed The Bulldog that made one wonder how much
longer he'd be around.
This is being said simply because of his portrayal in
"Under the Mat" ... as a person, who like other Harts,
seemed destined for disaster.
And this does add yet another eerie twist in the long
listed "Hart curse" which has seemingly been hanging
around since 1997.
The Survivor Series screw-job ... the WCW
debacle ... The Bulldog breaking his back a WCW ring
... Bret's career being ended ... Owen's death ... The
Bulldog's failed WWF return ... The death of Helen ...
the "Under the Mat' controveries ... This does cover
everything ... It has truly been a series of bad
mishaps and circumstances.
Back in 1997, The Bulldog jumped to WCW along with
Bret ... who can forget WCW's mis-use of The Bulldog.
It was pathetic. Shortly after recovering from
breaking his back on The Warrior's trap door, The
Bulldog came back to the WWF with the angle that he
was pursuing the WWF world title in honor of Owen.
While promos to this effect were taped, none ever
aired and the angle was dropped completely.
The final run wasn't as memorable as previous stints.
Teaming with the Mean Street Posse seemed lower than
any lack-of-notice in WCW.
Smith's push was mediocre with Hardcore and Euro title
reigns but ended only after a few months. His final
stint with Titan resulted in a release due to
substance abuse.
Ironically enough, Smith is the second-former-partner
of Owen Hart who has passed away ... the first being
Yokozuna.
Personally, I always preferred The Bulldog as a heel.
Like Owen, Smith seemed to excel as a heel and seem
somewhat lost as a face.
His memorable feuds as a face are less than memorable.
The only two I can remember are The Warlord (WWF,
circa 1992) and Big Van Vader (WCW, circa 1993). But
as a heel, many WWF fueds and angles come to mind. The
only real fued that Smith had when jumping to WCW back
in 1997 was with another wrestling enigma, Steve
McMichael. It was a brief push that went no where.
When Smith went back to Titan, I believe he was
initially a face but quickly turned into a luke-warm
heel that no one seemed to care about. Maybe he was
paired with The Posse to generate cheap heat.
Regardless, his brief few months with the WWF were
basically unmemorable.
I'll probably always remember watching the Bulldog (or
"The Bulldogs") when I was a kid. And, sadly enough,
I'll probably remember the chilling stories of Smith
from Diana Hart's book even more than any match or
promo. Maybe that's the problem with knowing the truth
... sometimes, you'd rather not.
A final irnoy ... They say deaths "come in
threes." Thesz, Wahoo and Pee Wee a few weeks ago.
Davey Smith, Dick Dudley and Erik Kulas (of the
infamous ECE-NEw-Jack-"Mass-Transit-Incident") all
died this week.
