Sid Justice vs. El Diablo Flashback Match of the Week
| [1/3/03]
|
WWF Superstars; 1992; Vince, Roddy Piper and Randy Savage on commentary.
EL Diablo is in the ring (just a side-note ... remember when certain wrestlers didn't have theme music) and Vince says that this "newcomer" is "a karate expert of some kind." Hmmmmm ... sounds techincal.
Sid's music hits. Sid--terrible face but great music. Sid's idea of being a face was simply smiling versus grimmacing.
Anyway, the bell sounds and moments later, another bell sounds in the form of The Undertaker's old theme. A classic wrestling theme ... no Fred Durst to be seen.
Diablo gets out of the ring as Bearer and UT approach. Bearer give Diablo a steel briefcase in exchange for his spot against Sid. The "blonde" yet masked Diablo accepts and leaves as UT disropes and enters the ring. Just to show how early this was--no tattoos on Taker.
The two have a stare-down as Savage remarks, "These are two big men looking eye-to-eye." UT gets Sid in a choke but Sid counters--a double choke ensues when we see Diablo sprinting back to the ring.
Diablo runs in, whips off his mask, revealing himself as Jake "The Snake" Roberts and attacks Sid.
They just don't make heels anymore like Jake and (classic, evil) Undertaker.
Jake and Taker choke out Sid then Jake hits the DDT. Bearer comes back to the ring with a casket. After tying Sid up in the ropes, Jake goes for the briefcase, slips on a leather glove and pulls out one of the biggest cobras.
Sid feins fear as Jake nears but suddenly Hacksaw Jim Duggan hits the ring. He topples the casket (with great ease despite the fact that coffins weigh quite a bit) and unties Sid as Jake and UT are distracted.
Sid escapes and knocks down a row of refs who are trying to stop the duo from re-entering the ring. Jake lets the cobra loose and Savage says he's "gutless."
UT pays homage (a la the urn) to the cobra as the segment ends.
This was obvious one of the many WWF feuds throughout the 80's and 90's that started on TV but ended at house shows.
