Ric Flair in an Insane Asylum
Flashback Match of the Week
[4/25/03]

From the Summer of 1999 ... WCW Nitro...

This was after Roddy Piper had WCW "President" Ric Flair committed to an insane asylum.

Sting defeats DDP for the world title and we see a divided screen--Flair on the right and Charles "Little Naitch" Robinson on the left. Both are holding phones for a few seconds before they actually start talking. Flair is calling from the "Central Florida Mental Hospital" and is dressed in his wrestling robe versus a hospital robe.

Flair wants Robinson to sign Sting vs. Goldberg for Slamboree '99 ... he asks "Triple A" (an inmate) what he think and they exchange a rapid series of "Whoooos." Flair then turns around and asks, "What do you think you bunch of morons? Is that big time?" to a group that we don't see.

Flair prances away from the pay phone and an unknown inmate bounces a big rubber ball of Flair's head. Flair's facial reaction is priceless and hilarious. Triple A asks Flair if he's ok ... end segment.

Segment #2 ... Flair is talking with Robinson again and wants a 4-way on Nitro for the world belt--Goldberg vs DDP vs Nash vs Sting. Flair hangs up and asks "Nurse" Asya if she's ever heard of Space Mountain. Flair then gets on all-fours ... end segment.

Segment #3 ... On the phone again, Flair wants Robinson to signed Booker T. vs. Rick Steiner at Slamboree. Robinson tells Flair that he's the greatest and he makes the 4-way a no-DQ.

Flair gets off the phone and starts to show a group of inmates how to dance like he does. All of a sudden, another inmate is standing behind Flair as he dances ... the camera pans over to reveal Scott Hall, dressed in an inmate robe. The inmates and Flair mock Hall ... Hall tosses his toothpick at Flair. End segment.

This seemed really bad at the time ... but, upon re-viewing a few years later, this is really funny stuff. Allegedly, we were supposed to eventually see Hall and Flair escape and return to WCW together. Yet another abandonded angle in the realm known as WCW.

However, these segments would have been better if (1) Robinson actually served a purpose for being on camera as he basically just agreed with Flair whenever they were talking. Showing more of Flair's antics would have been a better choice. Also, being that Flair was doing the bulk of the talking, aesthetically, Flair should have been on the left hand side with Robinson on the right.

Regardless, this is a pretty funny segment ... a segment which would have been God-awful if done with anyone other than Flair.
