Flashback Match of the Week
[2/13/03]
By: Jake Butikas

From WWF Superstars; Summer 1993; Vince McMahon, Randy Savage and Jerry Lawler on commentary.

King of the Ring qualifying matches...

The predecessor to the Titan Tron sits low to the ground next to the entrance way. Doink comes out with an umbrella. Great, fantastically spooky music for Doink. Evil Doink is one of the best, under-appreciated gimmicks. Matt Borne was perfect as the maniacle Doink.

Doink is half-out of his wig-mask ... as Perfect enters, we see Doink tying his mask on the big screen. Then it cuts to Mr. Perfect's logo ... another good theme in Perfect's "Exodus." It truly fit his character, probably moreover as a heel than a face.

Hennig stops to talk with a fan and Doink jumps into screen, nailing Perfect and sending him down. A brawl starts on the outside as the bell sounds. Lawler constantly refers to Perfect as "Mr. Mediocre."

Perfect takes control, working on Borne's left leg then sending him over the top with a chop. The announcers wonder if we'll see multiple Doinks as another brawl on the outside ensues. Back inside, Perfect again focuses on the left leg of Doink then sends him to the outside again, this time with a knee lift ... commercial break.

After the break, Perfect is on the outside. We're told that Doink rammed him into the ring post. Doink comes off the top rope to the outside, hitting Perfect with an axe handle. On a sub-screen, Doink appears and when asked my McMahon how he can appear in two places at once, he answers, "It's an illusion." Lawler says that the newest show in Las Vegas is "Sigfried, Roy & Doink."

This match features Borne's Doink at his finest. Vince claims he is an "evil, evil man." Doink off the top rope again with another ax handle. Doink laughs, eerily looking devious.

A very stiff slugest ends when Perfect hooks a small package for the 2-count. Another slugfest ... Perfect ducks the punch with a backslide. Another 2-count. A roll-up results in what sounded like a 3-count by the ref but Doink is out ... the crowd boos.

After a failed pinfall attempt after a suplex, Perfect hits Doink with one of the loudest chops ... the crowd gasps as Doink no-sells and another stiff series of slaps culminates with a Perfect Plex at the bell ... "The Time limit has expired."

Perfect argues with the ref as Doink slithers out of the ring and mugs for the camera, acting a combination of happy and irrate.

Perfect and Borne had a good series of matches that summer with the winner entering the King of the Ring ... more to come...
