Gillberg vs Luna
Flashback of the Week
[4/3/03]

From WWF RAW, January 1999.

Tony Garea along with a herd of security guards are standing outside a dressing room, labled, "Gillberg."

Garea knocks and tells Gillberg it's time. Drums start in the background. Dwayne Gill ermerges in his Goldberg rip-off persona ... black trunks, fake tattoo, cruiserweight title and plenty of growling.

Security escorts Gillberg down the hall ... Gillberg is snarling, slapping his head, waving his arms and sticking out his tongue as they proceed. Suddenly, above the drums, a "Gillberg" chant begins. Michael Cole states that no one in the audience is chanting and that it must be "pumped in."

On rampway, the J.O.B. Squad awaits with sparklers. Gillberg stands in the sparklers as the announcers laugh about the pyro. More growling and posing from Gillberg. Suddenly, one of the sparks burns his shoulder and he starts choking from the smoke.

In the ring, Gillberg says it doesn't matter "Who's Next," as he wants to know "Who's first?"

Down comes Luna who, we are told, will be using this match as preparation against Sable.

Luna squashes Gillberg ... Gillberg whines after a groin shot but momentarily reverses a suplex but ends up dropping Luna on top of himself. Cole says that, "true to form, Gillberg has one move."

Luna comes off the top rope with a splash for the pin. The announcers say that "the count begins..."

Much like Hogan apparently forgot about The Huckster, Goldberg has obviously forgiven the WWE for Gillberg.

At the time, the parody seemed somewhat (both) babyfied as well as justified (if that makes sense). WCW had just started giving away pre-taped RAW results on Nitro including Mick Foley's title win. But, on the opposite hand, the WWF stooped to WCW's obnoxious level. Poking fun at and pointing out WCW's weaknesses (i.e. Goldberg chants being "pumped" into arenas) was the WWF's way of retaliation...
