On page 185 of "In the Pit with Piper," Roddy Piper states, "Let me be real honest with you folks, I didn't need another "Hell Comes to Frogtown. (I still claim to this day that it was my evil twin brother who did that movie)..." Indeed, "Hell..." isn't one of the most memorable movies ... perhaps why it's only $3.99 on DVD.
Furthermore, you know you're in trouble when the DVD loads and it states, "STRAT MOVIE." Yes, they misspelled "start."
The premise of this film actually sounds good on proverbial paper. Sam Hell (Piper) is the last fertile man on the planet. Or, at least, that's what we're told. Years of war caused all human males and many women to become sterile.
The Government rescues Hell (sometimes also referred to as "Hellman" ... yet another mishap of this film) from an angry "policeman." It seems Hell(man) raped the cop's daughter but she dropped all charges when she learned she was carrying a Little Piper. The cop vows vengeance after a thrashing by the Government agent Spangle (Sandahl Bergman).
Hell becomes a pawn of the Government ... like the premise to "Le Femme Nikita," Hell is granted a pardon if he agrees to perform certain Governmental tasks. Unlike "Le Femme," these tasks involve getting women pregnant.
Suddenly, we're told about a group of fertile women being held hostage by a group of mutants in Frogtown. I belive they are referred to as "Toadies."
The goal: break the fertile women out and get the pregnant. Hell, along with Spangle and a tough-M-60-toting chick go through the desert on the way to Frogtown. Also on the way, Hell performs his duties with a fertile escapee from Frogtown.
Spangle and Hell go into Frogtown ... discover their "contact" who is a female-frog-dancer ... Hell finds the guy who raised him ... Spangle gets taken into the King Frog's harem ... the Female Frog comes onto Hell and ends up dying for him ... Hell and the old dude recuse the girls and they take off in the desert.
A desert chase ends concludes with Hell battling the King Toad, eventually killing him when he falls of a large ledge. Then Hell tangles with a mysterious man in a gas mask who turns out to be the pissed-off cop from the start of the film. A long fight concludes with Hell killing the angry cop ... Hell and Spangle discover that they have feeling for each other and they plan to get together, once Hell's "job" is complete.
OK ... again, the loose plot, on paper, could have been decent. The only thing that makes this movie salvagable is the fact that Piper stars.
The beginning of the film, with Hell and the angry cop, seems edited, almost as if they elminated the first few seconds. This was odd. Also, the occasional reference to Hell as "Hellman" just added to the inconsistancies.
The premise of the Toadies possibly could have been decent but it just wasn't. The costumes for the Frogmen were kind of cool looking but they looked too much luike "Gremlins."
Furthermore, this film contained many allusions to other films such as "Gremlins" (the Frogs), "Mad Max," and "Star Wars." Maybe "allusion" is an improper word. Probably the better term would be "immitation."
Technically speaking ... the DVD was of rather poor quality. The film itself was grainy and was not up to the typical DVD standards. The sound is also drowned-out at times.
Like Piper? Then, check out "Hell Comes to Frogtown" for giggles. If you're not in the mood for a really bad sci-fi flick, then check out They Live instead.
Regardless ... it's still better than any other Hulk Hogan venture.
