Drop Kickin' It Old School Review

From 1985, Coliseum Video. A "Superstar Series" featuring new WWF champ, Hulk Hogan.

A few initial observations ...

No theme music for Hogan during any of his matches. No themes for anyone for that matter.

Modern day fans may not appreciate the "old school" elements featured in these matches.

Hogan is billed and referred to as "'The Incredible' Hulk Hogan."

Everything was so much different back, almost 20 years ago from the matches to announcing down to the wrestling crowds themselves.

What kid, in 1985, didn't believe?

First match ... Hogan vs. Greg Valentine (IC Champ) ... great commentary by Gorilla Monsoon ... rare title vs title match ... match is edited ... very old school ... good match, actually, the best of the tape ... Hogan wins with (of course) the leg drop ... the two brawl afterwards ... from the Philly Spectrum.

Hogan vs "Big" John Studd ... Hogan, before the match, speculates if he can slam the big guy ... Heenan tells us that the $15,000 body slam challenge is active for this match ... Hogan gets "busted wide open" after Studd rams him into the ring post ... Studd gets counted out and "The Incredible Hulk" retains the belt.

Interview from TNT ... Vince McMahon and Lord Alfred Hayes hosting ... Hogan is the guest; all three are standing in front of a table featuring food and a blender ... Hogan tells us that nothing gets him excited like "beautiful women, bicep curls and nutrition" ... Insert steriod joke here ... Hogan talks about his two new products, "Python Powder" and "Python (vitanmin) Packs" and claims that they will be in stores soon ... He claims that the powder, along with "training, sayin' your prayers and taking you vitamins" will get you big ... insert second steriod joke here ... Regarding the "Python Packs," Hogan claims you won't need any other medicine or pills ... insert third steriod joke ... Hogan mixes a protein drink and tries to get Lord ALfred to drink it ... Hulk claims if you start his program, your shirt will start to rip ... Finally, Alfred takes the protein and feigns vomitting.

The Incredbile Hulk vs. Dr. D. David Schultz ... Hogan is wearing blue--odd ... Hulk gets "Pearl Harbored" and gets worked over for the first 10 minutes ... Dr. D. clocks him with a chair and, viola, Hogan is bloody ... Hogan Hulks-Up, hits the leg drop but refuses to pin Dr. D. ... instead, he throws him to the outside ... Hulk rams Dr. D. into the ring post, head first--"Snake Eyes" style ... Dr. takes control again, misses a "3rd rope" knee, Hogan hits a clothesline and gets the pin. Afterwards, Dr. attacks Hogan, puts on the belt but is thwarted shortly thereafter.

Hogan vs. Studd in a steel cage ... typical, 1980s steel cage ... Hogan gets bloody but crawls through the door to victory.

Hogan vs. The Iron Shiek ... the WWF world belt looked much different back in 1984 ... One sign in the audience reads, "The Shiek is a Freak!" ... Hogan attacks Shiek while he's still in his robe ... the announcers talk-up Hogan but also act like they've never seen him before ... Hogan dominates, getting the pin in the famous finish ...

Why wasn't Hogan v. The Shiek shown first on this tape instead of last?
