Hulk Still Rules
DVD Review

This is a fantastic collection of matches ranging from 1979 to the mid-1990's. Along with over 20 matches, interviews and promos, Hogan also "tells his story" in a series of chapters.

Positives: This collection is broad and contains everything from Hogan's MSG debut (as a heel) vs. Ted DiBiase to an AWA jobber match and the "Puerto Rican Downpour" match against John Studd. To my astonishment, the WWE didn't (1) do voice-overs on old commentary (as they have been known to do in the past) and (2) every reference to the WWF is intact. I expected--whenever someone mentioned "The World Wrestling Federation"--for a voice-over to plug-in "Entertainment" over the "Federation." Also, oddly enough, a couple of the matches do not contain commentary ... again, a nice feature that they were left without manipulation. I wouln't have enjoyed hearing Jonathan Coachman and Michael Cole do commentary for Hogan-Andre at Shea Stadium.

Speaking of which, Hoagn not only slams Andre in that match--debunking the "fact" that Andre had never been slammed until Wrestlemania 3--but Andre "pins" Hogan regardless of the fact that Hogan is obviously up before the 3-count. Hogan bloodies Andre after the match ... something Roddy Piper claimed in his book that Andre only let him do.

"Hulk Still Rules" also features Hogan vs. Piper at "Wreslevision" (in the "Chapters" segments, Hogan bashes Piper's unwillingness to put him over in a WWF ring), vs. The Undertaker from "This Tuesday in Texas" and Mr. Perfect from "Saturday Night's Main Event." Seeing Hogan wrestle Studd in a downpour is interesting and funny. Along with a few promos, several "TNT" interviews are included. Classic stuff.

Negatives: Well, there aren't many negatives here. The "Chapters," as told by Hogan, are sometimes bland but the video montages usually compensate. The most recent match on this set is from 1994 (vs. Flair at WCW's "Bash at the Beach") ... highlights from the nWo days and his WWE return are shown in highlights and montages instead of actual matches. Tricky marketing considering the nWo DVD...

Other negatives ... a few of the matches do not contain ring intros and a couple seem out of place in lieu of other matches that could have been used. Probably many modern-day, band-wagon fans will fail to appreciate many of the moments on this DVD set ... after all, there is a huge difference between 1983 and 2003.

If I wanted anything from this collection ... I wanted more. Just think of how many DVDs the WWE could release containing never before seen matches from the 1980's and 1990's. It would be endless. Seeing more of these matches--such as the aformentioned "Puerto Rican Downpour"--would have been nice. Personally, I would love to see Jake Roberts vs. Hogan (the matches Roberts claim ruined a chance at a series with Hogan) as well as Hogan vs. Flair from MSG (their first meeting in 1991) and Hogan vs Stan Hansen from Japan.

But compaints are few. Probably many modern-day, band-wagon fans will fail to appreciate many of the moments on this DVD set ... after all, there is a huge difference between 1983 and 2003.
