WWE King of the Ring 2002
DVD Review
[3/21/03]

The awkwardness of the DVD coupled with a frustratingly bad card makes this a DVD to avoid.

Firstly, it is difficult to navigate through this DVD. The "Chapters" include matches such as Ric Flair vs. Eddy Guerrero and Molly vs. Trish but fail to list Hulk Hogan vs. Kurt Angle. To access this match, you have to watch the Kurt Angle interview.

Furthermore, the King of the Ring is set in a bracket format. This is cool as you can access the finishes to the qualifying and second round matches. But frustrating being that it is separate from the "Chapters" section. Possibly this is why certain matches were accidentally left off the Chapters list.

The extras include very brief interviews with Test, Kurt Angle, Jamie Noble and Brock Lesnar. Nothing much here. The King of the Ring commercial is funny and the additional commercials featuring an array of odd characters auditioning for the KOTR is funny. But not something you'll want to really watch again.

The matches:

The Hurricane vs Jamie Noble: Great match. Unquestionably, this opener is the best match on the show. A fantastic effort by both guys which sees Noble winning the strap.

Flair vs Eddy: This match should have been much better. Much, much better. Slow with some decent chop-fests. Chris Benoit runs down and distracts the ref ... Buh Buh Ray Dudley runs in and gives Eddy the Buh Buh Bomb. Flair makes the cover for the 1-2-3. Bad finish.

Trish vs. Molly: the standard match for these two. Not bad. Molly reverses a roll-up and uses the tights to secure the belt.

Hogan vs. Angle: Again, another match that should have been much, much better. There is not much here. Some funny moments with Hogan stealing Angle's wig and wrestling headgear. Angle wins with the ankle lock ... a decent finish. Angle grabs Hogan in the ankle lock during a leg drop attempt ... Hogan battles the ankle lock for a small period of time before submitting. The announcers claim that Hogan has never "tapped out" before. Or, "submitted," as for the majority of Hogan's days, a simple nod of the head signalled a submission.

Undertaker vs. Triple H: WWE title match. Bad. Bad. Bad. The ref takes a bump and goes down for about 10 minutes. Guys get up from chairshots faster. But anyway, The Rock comes down, gets involved and to make a long, tedious story very short--UT wins after a low-blow and a roll-up. Afterwards, The Rock, Triple H and Taker engage in the standard finisher-fest.

RVD vs. Chris Jericho (KOTR): A good match which sees RVD win the frog splash.

Test vs. Brock Lesnar (KOTR): Worst match of the show. The fans can seemingly care less. A slow match with many blown spots. During one blown spot (at the mid-way point), they obviously lose direction and become confused very fast. From that point on, it just drags on. Test hits a nice big boot and Brock kicks out. Test goes for a second and Paul Hayman jumps on the apron. Test starts to charge and Hayman slaps Test on the back. Test *falls* down. The announcers ponder what happened and why Test went down. Ross clarifies that Heyman was only distracting Test. Watching this spot over, you can obviously see Hayman reach out and slap Test on the back ... Test sells like he just got clocked with a chair. You'd think this would be edited out ... but anyway, Test gets caught in the F-5 moments later. Thank God, this one's over.

RVD vs. Brock (KOTR finals): A quick match but very watchable. Brock wins with the F-5 ... a good finish.
