The Main Event (Feb. 1990)
Drop Kickin' It Old School Review
[9/20/02]
By: Brian Hansbrough

Broadcast in prime time on February 23, 1990 by NBC, from the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

What a disappointment. Mike Tyson had been heavily hyped as the special guest referee, but the chaos of reality settled in and left us with James “Buster” Douglas. Tyson’s wrestling involvement would be delayed for a few years, after his management allegedly pulled him from this arrangement.

HULK HOGAN VS RANDY SAVAGE: The Macho King gets a rematch with an old sparring partner. Queen Sherri stands in his corner. Referee is Earl Hebner. The inclusion of Douglas as outside referee does little for the match, but Hogan and Savage knew each other so well that they could have done this match drunk and blindfolded ... which means it was good quality, even though it was a given that Hogan wasn’t going to drop the title before Wrestlemania. Hebner takes a dive, but Douglas makes the three count after the Hogan legdrop. An early hint at what would come later in the business, Savage actually does kick out before the three count ... which gives him reason to make Douglas look good for the crowd .. which he does. Hogan instigates, pushing Savage into a Douglas punch. The punch doesn’t connect so well, and it appears as if Savage tells Douglas to deck him one more time .. which he does. A shame Tyson wasn’t involved. This would have been as classic as Ali and Gorilla Monsoon in the annals of wrestling/boxing cross promotion.

ULTIMATE WARRIOR VS DINO BRAVO: Is it just me, or did Bravo resemble the lead singer of a lounge band located somewhere in Parts, Unknown? Bravo had Jimmy Hart and Earthquake in his corner. Warrior did his usual spiel promo prior, which by this time had most little kids in America wondering what the hell he was on besides steroids. During the match, Warrior pulls Jimmy Hart underneath the ring and pulls his pants off, leaving him in red underwear ... let’s move on. Bravo actually matched up well with Warrior strength and size wise, and probably knew quite a bit more wrestling technique as well. Regardless, the flying shouder block/tackle and follow-up splash led to a Warrior win. The heels double-team the victor, leading to a Hulk Hogan save ... and yet another staredown. McMahon follows the match with a promo for Wrestlemania 6 and interviews with the men of muscle.
