Rowdy Roddy Piper's Greatest Hits
Drop Kickin' It Old School Review

This tape has kayfabe written all over it. But that’s OK because indeed, this was a great nostalgic era in wrestling. "Mean" Gene introduces the tape and praises yet, because he was a face announcer, is obviously disgusted with the subject of the collection--Roddy Piper.

Truly, a good tape that captures some of the classic Piper heel moments of the mid-1980s.

--Piper & "Dr. D" David Schultz vs. Andre the Giant & Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. A good match regardless of the fact that when we think of this era, we only remember "Dr. D" for his assault on John Stossel from ABC’s "20/20." I remember that "20/20" incident and what a proverbial stir it caused. And like the similar question of the 1990s .. .did Vince screw Dr. D? Guess we’ll never know.

Piper busts open Andre with a chain and not only does the Giant bleed but he is escorted from the ring after the Piper-Dr. D beating ensues. Quite odd to see the unbeatable Giant put over Piper and Schultz by leaving the match after just a chain-shot. Snuka continues the match two-versus-one and the crowd loves it. An amazing pop occurs when Andre, all wrapped up and blood-stained, comes back to the ring and cleans house. The heels win it by DQ...

--Piper interviews jobber Frank Williams on one of the greatest wrestling interview segments, Piper’s Pit. Piper mocks Williams’ lack of wins then tosses him around a bit.

--Piper interview Mr. T on the set of "The A-Team" which leads to...

--Piper versus Hogan on MTV’s Rock ‘n Wrestling Connection. Yet again, a brawl ensues with Mr. T, "Cowboy" Bob Orton and Cindy Lauper gets involved. We are told that she is at ring-side however we never see any involvement by Feminist Gloria Steinem.

--Piper’s Pit with Roddy piper interviewing ... Roddy Piper. For the time, a very unique "video exclusive" segment featuring Piper standing side-by-side and interviewing himself. Some classic moments as the two Pipers interact and carry on a conversation ... showing the off-beat, sometimes nonsensical humor that Piper is famous for. And while there are some great lines in this "interview" (including an explanation of the "Hot Rod" shirt ... and how Piper manages to "get someone pregnant"), truly Piper’s greatest line ("I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass ... and I’m all out of bubble gum.") came not in wrestling but in John Carpenter’s 1989 unrecognized sci-fi film, "They Live."

--A confused Mean Gene shows up at the "Mid City Health Club for Men" where he, via a retrospective voice-over, claims that Piper "may not be sane." At the club, Gene hangs with Piper, Orton and Wrestlemania partner Paul "Mr. Wonderful" Orndorff as they train for the big event. The end has the threesome throwing Mean Gene out in the street then beating a passerby in the process.

--Piper accompanies Bob Orton to a public doctor’s appointment (hosted by Vince McMahon) to check on the condition of his (at the time) always recovering broken arm. It was obviously a hollow set but it was played-off like it was a real doctor’s office. The Doc tells Orton that his arm was fully healed however Piper and the "Cowboy" disagree. McMahon, in a pink suit jacket (and long before he owned all of the competition) sides with the Doc...

--The infamous Piper’s Pit featuring the infamous stiff pineapple shot on Jimmy Snuka which literally tears down the Pit set.

--Piper interview on the old USA network’s TNT ... Lord Alfred Hayes and Vince McMahon challenge Piper on his assault of Snuka. Piper gets up to leave but before he does, lays in a heavy slap onto Hayes

--Piper vs. Snuka with Lou Thesz as special guest referee. Thesz is not a ref afraid to take a bump--Piper pulls Thesz in the way of a Snuka flying head-butt. Piper takes off Thesz’s belt and starts whipping Snuka ... Piper hits Thesz, Snuka grabs the belt and Piper runs to the back ... It was no-DQ but Snuka wins by count-out...

--A la the segment earlier in the tape when Piper reads a letter from Hulk Hogan’s mother (complete with misspellings) Piper reads a letter from Snuka’s son, begging Piper’s forgiveness. Funny stuff.

--Piper challenges the Tonga Kid but not before making fun of the Kid for wearing "that funny little skirt."

--Piper vs The Tonga Kid (w/Snuka) ... it goes to a double-DQ.

--Piper & Orton vs. Tonga & Snuka ... Piper rips on Snuka’s "I love you" sign ... it ends in a double DQ and fails to live up to the expectations set by Gene moments earlier as an great finale to the collection.

However, even though the majority of the tape consists of interview segments, they are entertaining. Piper is definately in his prime. Without a doubt ... the don't do stuff like this anymore. And don’t forget the ad for "upcoming" Coliseum Video releases after the credits...
