Hey--remember when wrestling was a product for kids? Remember when the Sunny-Tickle Me Elmo segment on "Shotgun" caused controversy? Remember when they cancelled the Goldust birth angle do to negative feedback? We certainly have come a long way since then, huh?
Absolutely heinous--is there any better way to describe the Triple H-Katie Vick RAW (10/21) segment?
Over the past few months, we've seen a swerve on a gay marriage ... lesbians ... an angle involving a murder ... and now, necrophilia. Truly ... this is as low as the WWE can possibly get. Anything lower would be pedophilia.
The WWE's online explanation (issued on 10/22) is laughable, citing other TV shows with "dark humor" as the basis of this segment. Let's face it ... this was done for pure shock value to gain ratings. Comparing this segment to other programs is simply an attempt to shift the focus away from the WWE. By the way, the WWE is also careful to make sure the rating of the program (TV-14) is plainly listed in this statement. As if 15 year-olds are cool with necrophilia. This explanation is simply damage control bluster.
They are also careful to point out that a disclaimer aired before the segment ... what about the people attending live? They couldn't switch the channel even if they wanted to.
As someone who typically enjoys the controversy surrounding wrestling in general, I personally found this segment to be nothing but the lowest form of pornography.
The WWE is obviously desperate for creativity. The Triple H necrophilia scene wasn't the product of any talented, adult writers ... it was the product of deplorable, desperate perverts. How anyone can be proud of this segment is truly beyond any rational.
The defenses: it was a "dummy" ... it was all a joke ... it was supposed to be entertainment. These are all weak, lame and pathetic. Plain and simply, there were and are no excuses or defenses. The angle, as stated on WWE.com as "The Most Controversial Segment Ever," will go down as the lowest point in wrestling. And possibly, there biggest mistake to date.
