I remember the rush to the local video store after school on Coliseum Video release dates. And as a kid, my favorites were always the heels so Supertape '92 was of particular interest. Not only was there a "Special Profile" on The Undertaker but the prime-early-'90s-villain Jake Roberts versus Randy Savage.
Like the pay-per-views of today, the Coliseum Videos of yesterday gave us stellar matches that were "video exclusives" and thus, better than anything seen on regular old TV. Watching this tape some ten years after intially seeing it brought back a lot of memories as well as made me wonder, at times, what the hoopla was all about. I mean, it's a good tape, but some of the matches and features are, well ... kind of lame. The "BONUS! Tax Tips With IRS!" failed to interest me now and then ... and the match between IRS and Bret Hart was anything but stellar with a typical ending.
But that doesn't mean that Supertape '92 is a bad tape. Like all Coliseum Videos from the time, it contained cheesy features that seem better when fast forwarded through.
The feature on The Undertaker is actually very entertaining, especially if you enjoyed the Taker during his original rule-breaking incarnation. UT is actually pretty young here and you get to see him in action without having to watch him spit tobacco or act like a biker. This is "old school" Taker with the-now-"American-Bad-Ass" defending his WWF title against Hulk Hogan mere days after he won the belt at Survivor Series 1991. And granted, the finish (Hogan throwing urn ash in the Taker's eyes and scoring the win) wasn't the greatest but it wasn't terrible either; it set up the immortal Royal Rumble 1992 when Ric Flair took the gold, so it can't be that bad.
Above all, the one reason to check out Supertape '92 is the seldom seen, seldom remembered pay-per-view, "This Tuesday in Texas." The Undertaker's ring intro with the WWF belt title is worth that $1.00 rental fee alone!
